How to convert grams to ounces
To convert grams to ounces, divide each value by the exact factor in the box: 1 gram = 0.0352739619 ounces (exactly 1 oz = 28.349523125 g). There is no rounding anywhere in the chain — the display trims the final answer to six decimal places, and converting the result back with the inverse page returns your starting number.
The gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, the unit of kitchen scales, nutrition labels and laboratory work almost everywhere. The ounce here is the avoirdupois ounce, one sixteenth of a pound — not the fluid ounce, which measures volume and converts to grams only through the density of whatever you are pouring. Keeping weight ounces and fluid ounces apart is the first skill of this conversion; this page is strictly about weight.
Baking is where grams meet ounces most often: an American recipe asking for 8 oz of flour means 226.8 g, while a European recipe's 250 g of butter is 8.82 oz on a US scale. Coffee is the other daily crossover — a 12 oz bag holds 340.19 g of beans, and a 18 g espresso dose is 0.63 oz. Postage and jewellery weights cross too: a standard letter at 20 g is 0.71 oz, safely inside a one-ounce stamp in either system.
The common mistake is dividing by 30 or 28 instead of the exact 28.349523125: at 500 g the divide-by-30 shortcut gives 16.67 oz against the true 17.64 oz, nearly a full ounce of missing flour. The reverse trap is trusting a recipe's own conversions, which are often rounded hard — a cup of flour listed as “120 g / 4 oz” hides that 4 oz is really 113.4 g. Convert the weight yourself with the exact factor and the recipe behaves the same on both sides of the Atlantic.
Worked example
100 grams is 3.527396 ounces: 100 ÷ 28.349523125 = 3.527396. That is a typical chocolate bar or a small bag of coffee beans — and the table below runs the same conversion to a full kilogram.
